The NT Independent is providing you with a light-hearted look at the candidates for the August 22 NT general election. We’re not looking at policy or platforms at this time, but rather at the person behind them.
Our Q&A should help you get to know the humans of NT politics.
Today’s profile is independent candidate for Drysdale, Raj Samson Rajwin. Here’s what he wrote:
“Raj Samson Rajwin has chosen to run for the seat of Drysdale as an independent. He has motivated few other candidates to run as independents. Some of them are stuck outside the NT due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.”
“Raj has lived in the NT for 14 years. He is a medical doctor and anesthetist from the best medical institute in India. After coming to Australia from India he worked as a medical doctor. He obtained positions such as assistant commandant and deputy superintendent police rank and as a doctor in paramilitary forces and central reserve police forces. He then continued in his advanced qualifications. He then went to back Delhi to work in ICU.”
“Raj was then preselected by the CLP following which he moved back to Darwin and became an Australian citizen. He relinquished his Indian citizenship and ran for the 2018 Palmerston Council election where he received more primary votes then two sitting council members.”
“Raj loves to help people without any expectation of reward. He has helped hundreds of people by providing them jobs and free accommodation. Recently he moved to construct extra toilets, showers and sheds to help selective people like Trevor Jenkins.”
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received and who did it come from?
I arrived in Australia in 2002. I asked Palmerston residents the issues that they were facing. They suggested me a few through Facebook. I printed their advice and suggestions. In the 2018 council election I got more primary votes than two siting councillors, thanks to them.
Summary: Listen to people.
Tell us something interesting or quirky about yourself.
Previously, I have lived in India working in ICU.
How would your best mate describe you in twenty words or less?
Stupid for leaving medicine for politics. Courageous. Honest. Passionate for social issues. Straightforward. I don’t talk behind the the back of someone.
If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring one movie, one album and one book, what would they be?
Movie on World War 1 and 2, Music of Dolly Parton, Book: The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History by Michael H. Hart.
If you could have dinner with any person in history, who would it be and why?
Albert Einstein. I wish to know if he really got the Nobel Prize only for his theoretical physics and theory on photoelectric effects. Did the USA know that Einstein had the capability to create nuclear weapon before he was awarded the Nobel Prize?
Maybe with a glass of wine he may speak out. He used to drink.
A couple of really quick questions. You can give one-word answers if you wish.
Tea or coffee?
Tea has antioxidants and is tastier. I am addicted to tea.
Folder or scruncher?
Folder.
AFL or NRL?
AFL (A stands for Australia).
Wet season or dry season?
Dry season obviously. I am from Delhi, India. Darwin dry season is exactly same as that of Delhi.
Coles or Woollies?
I like to go for a bit of drive with a can of coke. Coles is the farthest from my home so I go to Coles. On the way there I am able to finish my coke.
