The NT Independent is providing you with a light-hearted look at the candidates for the August 22 NT general election. We’re not looking at policy or platforms at this time, but rather at the person behind them.
Our Q&A should help you get to know the humans of NT politics.
Today’s profile is Territory Alliance candidate for Brennan, Abraham Mbemap.
Abraham has been a Territorian for 11 years, having moved here with his family from Cameroon.
Upon arrival, Abraham said they were welcomed and made to feel part of the community. With French as his first language and little to no English at that time, Abraham is grateful for the help and support he received which assisted in his transition and integration. He went to Sanderson Middle School for a year and Casuarina Senior College.
Abraham served as treasurer and later as president of the Student Representative Council.
He has immersed myself in the community by serving in various capacities, from sporting to local youth groups and non-for-profit organisations. This saw him win a Volunteer of the Year Award and being recognised as a national finalist for Pride of Australia Medal.
Running a family business with his wife, Abraham understands the challenges and difficulties faced by other businesses in such a low performing economy, compounded with the current COVID-19 crisis.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received and who did it come from?
In the context of marriage, a good friend and mentor Sean Geaney once told me, “strong marital relationships aren’t based on feelings but friendships. Going from friends to good friends, to better friends, to engaged friends, to married friends. This to ensure that when the relationship is tested, and feelings are gone your friendship can carry you through.”
Tell us something interesting or quirky about yourself.
There are two things I really enjoy and can sit through for hours… good debates and country music.
How would your best mate describe you in twenty words or less?
Answered by my friend: “Abraham is a hard-working reliable friend. His heart has always been to help others who are in need.”
If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring one movie, one album and one book, what would they be?
Book: The Bible
Album: Any country music.
Movie: Darkest Hour directed by Joe Wright. It’s a movie about Winston Churchill.
If you could have dinner with any person in history, who would it be and why?
Winston Churchill. He was a man of great convictions and successfully led his nation through their darkest time in modern history. I think his life spells courage, patriotism and service.
