The NT Independent is providing you with a light-hearted look at the candidates for the August 22 NT general election. We’re not looking at policy or platforms at this time, but rather at the person behind them.

Our Q&A should help you get to know the humans of NT politics.

Today’s profile is Territory Alliance candidate for Katherine, Melanie Usher.

Melanie was born in Katherine and raised on cattle stations in the region. Although Katherine was her hometown while she was growing up, she first moved into town in 2003 to join her husband.  Together they have built a home, a family and a business in Katherine. They are very active in the community, regularly volunteering their time for many good causes and community sporting groups.

Melanie completed a Bachelor of Arts – Humanities through Queensland University of Technology, going on to work in government before joining her husband in the family business, working as the office manager for 12 years. Melanie is passionate about small business, and has long lobbied for all levels of Government to develop procurement policies that will prioritise value for money and local content as a means to encourage the growth of local business as well as providing benefit to our economy.

As a former Katherine School of the Air student, coupled with her experiences from providing parent help at her children’s school, Melanie is keenly aware of the educational needs of our children. She is passionate about improving the results for our kids and believes the key is early years support.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received and who did it come from?

My Dad was constantly telling us to be aware of what’s in our peripheral vision, very sage advice when pushing cattle up in the back yards, but also relevant for everyday life.  Being aware of everything that is around you, not just what you’re looking directly at, is incredibly important for making fully informed decisions.

Tell us something interesting or quirky about yourself.

I like to sew, so for four years I didn’t buy ready made clothes for myself in an effort to have a fully home made wardrobe.

How would your best mate describe you in twenty words or less?

A thoughtful, compassionate person who strangely loves researching, an excellent mother raising her husband as well as her children.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring one movie, one album and one book, what would they be?

Movie – Love Actually directed by Richard Curtis. Album – Recurring Dream – The Very Best of Crowded House. Book(s) – the complete works of Terry Pratchett (I couldn’t pick one!)

If you could have dinner with any person in history, who would it be and why?

To be able to hear a first hand account of life in Australia at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries from a woman as politically minded and community driven as Edith Cowan would be fascinating.

A couple of really quick questions. You can give one-word answers if you wish.

Tea or coffee?

Folder or scruncher?

Wet season or dry season?

Coles or Woollies?
