The NT Independent is providing you with a light-hearted look at the candidates for the August 22 NT general election. We’re not looking at policy or platforms at this time, but rather at the person behind them.

Our Q&A should help you get to know the humans of NT politics.

Today’s profile is NT Greens candidate for Daly, Will Kemp.

Will has lived all over Australia, but he’s been around the Top End on and off for twenty years now, including a spell as housing manager for the council at Maningrida.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received and who did it come from?

“Come and have a beeeeeer!”. This was from my ex wharfie turned home brewer neighbour, Rosco, shouting through the fence around lunch time. I spent many hours round his place, listening to Rosco telling outrageous stories about his wild life. Sadly, he drank his quota and he’s moved on to that big pub in the sky now.

Tell us something interesting or quirky about yourself

I used to operate trucks the size of a two-storey house (400 tonnes fully loaded) in a large open cut mine. Now I’m a candidate for the Greens.

How would your best mate describe you in twenty words or less?

Honest, straightforward, no nonsense.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring one movie, one album and one book, what would they be?

There would be no electricity on a desert island, so there’s no point taking a movie or an album. The book I would take is Of Ashes and Rivers that Run to the Sea by Marie Munkara who lives in the Daly electorate. I reckon I could read that a few times without getting bored of it.

If you could have dinner with any person in history, who would it be and why?

Bill Harney. He’d have a few good yarns to tell.

A couple of really quick questions. You can give one-word answers if you wish.

Tea or coffee?

Folder or scruncher?

Depends what it is, but scruncher mostly.

Wet season or dry season?

Coles or Woollies?

Wagait Beach supermarket.
