NT Govt gave $400k of taxpayer funds to basketball club before books audited

The Darwin Basketball Association was forced to adjourn its annual general meeting this week because it could not provide audited financial statements for both it and the Darwin Salties NBL1 side for two years, which the chairman claimed was because its bookkeeper was sick, while the government declined to explain why $400,000 of taxpayer money was given to an organisation before seeing audited financial records.

The Federal Government has refused to say whether it will commit any funds toward the roughly $1 billion cost of a new Darwin city football stadium and other grounds to support a new Territory AFL team, as it has committed to Tasmania, while former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire said if there was to be a Northern Territory team, it should be “a long way down the track”.
