Territory Alliance’s new policing policy gets approval from NTPA

Territory Alliance’s new policing policy – which includes strengthening recruitment and remote policing and introducing post traumatic stress disorder legislation – has been backed by the Northern Territory Police Association.

The policy will see workplace compensation laws amended to create a presumption that PTSD is a work-related mental health condition for police and other eligible emergency responders.

Territory Alliance is also pledging to implement rolling recruit squads, increase the recruitment of Aboriginal community police officers, Aboriginal liaison officers and Police auxiliaries and establish a new model for remote policing.

Youth diversion and police discipline will be other issues addressed if the Terry Mills-lead party comes into power on August 22.

NTPA president Paul McCue said the association considered the policy well thought out.

“Presumptive PSTD legislation, recruitment and remote policing are some of the NTPA’s top priorities ahead of the August 22 NT general election, and we welcome today’s announcement by Territory Alliance that these key issues are included in their policing policies,” he said.

“The NTPA also welcomes a commitment to review the NT Police performance management and discipline system which we have been calling for, for more than a decade.”

Mr Mills said candidate for Johnston Steven Klose had consulted a large number of people to put together the policy.

“It’s time our men and women on the frontline of law enforcement every day get the genuine support they need. Territory Alliance has listened carefully to the Northern Territory Police Association concerns and we’re ready to step up efforts to help Territorians working hard on the frontline,” he said.

“Territory Alliance understand that to have effective law and order to reduce the unacceptable levels of crime in our community that affects the very fabric of our society we need to support Police on the frontline.”
