One of the Top End’s most popular fishing and camping destinations has been overrun with selfish visitors leaving rubbish, broken glass and even bags of human excrement in their wake, according to a long-term local.
Damien Berto has lived just off the iconic beach in a caravan since November last year and said he had witnessed “horrific and disgusting” acts from visitors in the past six months.
Mr Berto said poor behaviour at the recreational spot had become “much more prevalent” since Gunn Point Road had been fully sealed in 2019.
“I’ve seen some horrific acts out here … it’s an absolute disgrace,” he told the NT Independent.
“I found more than a dozen plastic bags of human faeces dumped on the beach just after the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
“It was absolutely disgusting, and it was from a big group, several cars, they set up a big camp with a gazebo, there were kids and everything.
“People are so lazy and inconsiderate to the next people that might stay here … it sets a terrible example.”

A website set up by Northern Territory Land Corporation, called gunnpoint.com.au, was launched in May to discourage similar incidents from happening.
At the beginning of June the NT Independent reported a group of Gunn Point campers were attacked by a gang of youths, who later returned and attacked others.
But Mr Berto said incidents such as a man breaking his ankles after being thrown from the roof of a four-wheel drive while “drift driving” on the beach in October last year, were proof behaviour in the location was out of control.
“It’s a fatality waiting to happen, it’s notorious,” he said.
“Even though they are supposed to be banned, there’s buggies, motorbikes and even 4WDs towing people from behind on ski ropes on the beach.
“Some of the stuff that happens here, you have to see it to believe it.
“It’s absolutely madness, someone will get killed.”
