Northern Territory Police have charged a man with attempted murder following a woman being stabbed in the Bagot community early Wednesday morning.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jak Evans, speaking at a press conference, said the 27-year-old woman was lucky to be alive after the “ferocious attack”.
He alleged she was leaving a house gathering when a man came up to her about 3.45am.
“He’s come at her with a knife and stabbed her a number of times before leaving the area,” Sgt Evans said.
“The victim had multiple stab wounds throughout her body.”
Officers provided first aid for her before St John Ambulance took her to Royal Darwin Hospital where she was in a serious condition.
He said police thought the woman and the man both lived at Bagot and knew each other.
“We believe he was actively avoiding police, we attended a number of locations and conducted a number of follow-ups after speaking to the victim’s family and witnesses,” Sgt Evans said.
“We’ve also recovered a number of knives and utilities that might have been used as the weapon but we can’t say for sure just yet.”
Sgt Evans said the man was arrested in Darwin CBD about 1pm.
NT Police spokesman Rob Cross said the 32-year-old man has been remanded in custody until tomorrow.
It follows the May 19 stabbing death of a 15-year-old boy in the same community.
Police charged another 15-year-old boy with the the murder.
