Labor Opposition Leader Selena Uibo has not committed to taking any action against Labor MLA Manuel Brown over his repeated speeding offences while admitting she is not confident he won’t do it again and refusing to answer whether the member’s 14-year-old son drove his private vehicle.
Ms Uibo appeared on Katie Woolf’s Mix 104.9 radio program on Tuesday morning following the NT Independent’s Friday revelation that Mr Brown was issued at least one speeding ticket in February this year, roughly one month after his licence was reinstated from a three-month suspension for racking up 12 demerit points in speeding fines over three years in his taxpayer-funded vehicle following his election to Parliament as the Member for Arafura.
An adult who allegedly permits a child to drive a motor vehicle may have committed an offence-in which case relevant matters might be determined by external entities irrespective of the views of the opposition leader or the caucus. If Mr Brown resigns or is expelled from Labor, would they lose official party status. And contrary to the arrogant presumption of insiders, it is not certain Labor would win a by-election should one arise. Who on earth advised the opposition leader to go on Katie Woolf and make weak and mealy mouth statements about public expectations, “the caucus” and “the team.” You’re the Leader Selina – and sometimes you’ve just gotta do the right thing- call him in, demand the full truth. get a written undertaking about past and future conduct, confirm he will make a formal apology to the Legislative Assembly if he he has committed any transgressions, quit the Leadership if the minnows in the caucus won’t support you.
Mr Brown is entitled to natural justice and if there is no serious misconduct he should continue as the Member for Arafura. Territorians are watching
