Almost 5000 lights have been removed in the Palmerston Council district and replaced with new LEDs in a project costing up to $3.65 million.
Council organisational services director Richard Iap said they’d replaced all 4879 street and public space lights in the region, with the project completed one year ahead of schedule.
He said the cost for the project would come in under the $3.65 million budgeted and provide long term savings.
“It is estimated that this project will now result in energy and maintenance savings of an estimated $517,000 annually,” he said.
Mr Iap said carbon dioxide emissions were expected to be reduced by up to 50 per cent with the new LEDs lights, which would be the equivalent of saving more than 470 tons carbon dioxide and planting more than 500 hectares of Australian forest trees.
The existing streetlights which were removed will be recycled.

4879 lights for 3.65 million, in Alice it took $198,000 I am led to believe for a grand total of 11 LED lights.
There are some serious questions that needs to be asked of Alice Springs Council on this one.
