The NT Police have officially concluded the victim identification process following the head-on collision on the Stuart Highway earlier this month, but are still investigating the cause of the deadly crash.
Acting Commander Robert Griffiths said the complex disaster victim identification (DVI) process has been finalised, allowing police to notify the families of all five victims involved in the crash.
“The Disaster Victim Identification team undertook a complex and challenging process to formally identify those involved and ensure their families could be notified,” Mr Griffiths said.
The DVI team has confirmed that five individuals tragically lost their lives in the incident. Among the deceased are a 20-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man, a 23-year-old woman, a 36-year-old man, and a 69-year-old woman.
All five families have now been informed after the formal identification process was completed, police said.
Mr Griffiths said the completion of the DVI process brings some closure to the grieving families during this difficult time.
The Major Crash Investigation Unit is still looking into the circumstances of the crash, and reports will be compiled for the Coroner.
The crash occurred around 12:50 pm, approximately 2km south of the Marrakai Road turn-off, where a Ford Ranger utility, heading north, reportedly veered onto the wrong side of the highway and struck a southbound Toyota Hi Ace van head-on.
Police said the force of the crash instantly ignited both vehicles. Despite attempts by nearby motorists to assist, the fierce flames made it impossible to save anyone trapped in the debris.
Witnesses said the Ford Ranger was driving at high speed and had been overtaking others just moments before the crash.
“This was an incredibly sad incident that resulted in five people losing their lives on our roads. I thank everyone involved for the professionalism and care shown throughout this process,” Mr Griffiths said.

This is a tragedy. Sounds like local Mob and some young backpackers on their trip of a lifetime. RIP, and I pray for your families left behind.
