Two men allegedly involved in Katherine’s bizarre hit-and-run incident on Tuesday that saw a woman run over twice have been arrested by police.

NT Police said a 21-year-old man from Katherine allegedly assaulted the 39-year-old driver of the ute that struck the female.

After the arrest, authorities said they also located the stolen Toyota HiLux in a nearby remote community. Police did not mention if the vehicle had been damaged or if there was anything stolen from the car.

A 26-year-old man was also arrested for allegedly stealing the vehicle and running over the legs of their female companion. It was unclear if the male drove over the female on purpose or if it was a mistake.

Police said the female pedestrian was struck on Katherine Terrace at about 9:45pm on Tuesday. Police Watch Commander Senior Sergeant Vicki Koum said on Wednesday that the pedestrian was among a group of people walking across Katherine Terrace heading towards Lindsey St when a Toyota HiLux travelling south on Katherine Terrace struck her.

“The driver stopped and immediately attended to assist the injured [female],” Cmdr Koum said.

“However, another male pedestrian that was in the same group, assaulted the driver, commencing punching and kicking him multiple times.

“The male pedestrian that assaulted the driver of the vehicle, then stole the HiLux, did some doughnuts, drove erratically around the scene down the Stuart Highway.

“Then he ended up running over the legs of the already injured [female], so [she] was run over twice.”

Both the victim and the owner of the vehicle were taken to Katherine Hospital. There was no update from the police on their condition. But Cmdr Koum earlier said both did not sustain life-threatening injuries, despite the female being run over twice.

There’s still no word from the police if the driver who first hit the pedestrian will be charged.

Both offenders who were arrested Wednesday will face Katherine Local Court today. The 21-year-old man was charged with aggravated assault and breach of bail. Police did not provide details about the man’s outstanding offense.

The 26-year-old man has been charged with recklessly endangering life, aggravated assault, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and other traffic offences.
