Indigenous Voice faces defeat as corporates fail to sway public opinion

Australian businesses’ support for the Voice is doing little to boost the flagging fortunes of the ‘yes’ campaign, Aljazeera reports. Corporate Australia has overwhelmingly backed the proposed Voice to Parliament: 13 of the top 20 businesses listed on the Australian Securities Exchange have publicly expressed support, with the rest staying neutral. Yet, that has done little to help the fortunes of the “yes” side, which appears to be headed for a crushing defeat when Australians cast their votes next month.

Household spending rebounds in August

Australia’s household spending rebounded in August, led by gains in the education, transport and recreation categories, data from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia showed, a sign of consumer resilience that bodes well for the economy. The CBA Household Spending Insights (HSI) index rose 0.7% to 137.0 in August from July when it was flat. The annual rate of increases, however, remained subdued, up just 2.3% and a world away from its peak of 18% last year, Reuters has reported.

Court rules that Qantas illegally sacked workers during COVID

Australia’s High Court upholds earlier ruling that the airline broke the law when it laid off 1,700 ground staff during the COVID-19 pandemic and outsourced ground handling jobs, Aljazeera has reported. The High Court said that Qantas interfered with unionised employees’ legal right to take industrial action and collectively bargain when it replaced the workers with contractors.

Jamie Oliver’s last Aussie restaurant closes owing $1million

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s last Australian restaurant has closed down while still owing $ 1 million, the Daily Mail reported. Jamie Oliver Pizzeria at Pacific Fair went into voluntary administration after four years in the Gold Coast location. It was the first of the famous British chef’s restaurants to open in Australia. The company said the failure was due to a ‘squeeze’ on consumer pockets during the cost-of-living crisis which has directly impacted business. The restaurant’s website, however, states there is a ‘new location coming soon’.
