Australian children as young as 10 are hooked on gambling

A Guardian Australia investigation has revealed an increasing number of young people are entering adulthood with depression and anxiety, alongside debt and relationship breakdowns, because of gambling in their youth. Data from the Gambling Help Online revealed a 16 per cent increase in the number of young people aged 24 and under contacting the help service in the 2022-23 financial year, with youth aged between 15 and 24 in Victoria accounting for about 600 of those 2,136 requests for help. It was found that children as young as eight find the content of gambling ads appealing and have high brand awareness and detailed recall of the content of those ads.

Voting on Indigenous Voice opens in Australia

Early voting opened Tuesday across a swathe of Australia on a reform that would recognise Indigenous people in the 1901 constitution for the first time, France24 has reported. The proposal—which would also give First Nations people the right to be consulted on policies that affect them—has only minority support after slumping in the polls. Polling stations opened Tuesday across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. They opened the previous day in the rest of the country.
