The Territory’s deficit this year will be more than double what the Fyles Government claimed in May, with net debt also expected to continue to increase to $10.2 billion in two years, according to the mid-year fiscal report tabled in Parliament Tuesday night.
Despite the increases to debt and deficit – and recent economic indicators, including the massive 5.3 per cent drop in the Gross State Product – the government is still boasting a return to an operating surplus next year and a strong economy over the next three years, including a surprise and unexplained 4.5 per cent increase in GSP in 2025-26.

Spending by governments is not building an economy. It does quite the opposite by increasing debt and continuing the cycle of feast and famine as projects reach completion. We need a strong private economy that stands on its own feet. The current crime and other factors around the cost of living are a disincentive for private enterprise.
If only government would get out of the way. For the voice they say yes , for business they say no.
