The Lawler Government’s confusing decision to move the Territory Day public fireworks display from its home at Mindil Beach to the Darwin Waterfront this year is no closer to being explained, after it was revealed at Estimates that no complaints about the festivities were ever raised by traditional owners and that a permit through the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority was never required.
The government has repeatedly refused to clearly explain why the change of venue was needed, with Major Events Minister Brent Potter stating last week that the event could not continue at Mindil “due to advice received that a permit would be needed to ensure the event complies with Aboriginal Area Protection Authority (AAPA) regulations.”
