A man was found dead in his cell at Holtze prison on Saturday morning, with NT Police saying the death is not considered suspicious.

The death follows on from a man dying in police custody earlier in the week.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said in a statement the 26-year-old man was found unresponsive in his prison cell by correctional officers about 7:50am on Saturday.

“Medical assistance was provided, but the man was declared deceased at the scene. The death is not believed to be suspicious,” Mr Wilton said.

Police said a report would be prepared for the coroner.

Last Tuesday, police said a 25-year-old man died after being arrested in Casuarina following reports of an assault at a retirement village.

Mr Wilton had said the suspect experienced breathing difficulties while secured in the rear of a police vehicle and later died at Royal Darwin Hospital.

Police said the Major Crime Unit is investigating that death under the supervision of the Professional Standards Command and a detailed report of evidence, including body-worn camera footage from the Casuarina arrest, would be submitted to the coroner.

In a statement responding to the 25-year-old man’s death, Amnesty International called for an independent investigation.

“No one should be at risk of dying simply because they have had an interaction with police,” Amnesty International said.

“For First Nations people in Australia, this fear remains very real. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to be over-represented in the criminal legal system and continue to die in custody decades after the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody handed down its recommendations.

“Many of those recommendations remain unimplemented.”
