UPDATED: NT Police say they have located missing 17-year-old Makasha Prayta and her one-year old child and both are “safe and well”.
The woman and her child were reported missing after her family had not seen her for more than 10 days.
Police said Ms Prayta attended the Alice Springs police station on Wednesday evening with her child and that police are no longer concerned about their welfare.
“We’d like to thank the community for their assistance in helping us locate the pair,” Superintendent Brett Prowse said.
Police did not offer a reason for the confusion or why Ms Prayta had not contacted her family.
Alice Springs Police said they located Ms Prayta’s blue Holden Commodore earlier this week but that she and her child were not in the vehicle.
Police first issued a statement about the matter on Monday, stating they held concerns for the pair’s welfare.
NT Police said Ms Prayta’s family members told them that she left home with her one-year-old child to travel to the cross-border region of Western Australia on October 24.
Initial investigations indicated that Ms Prayta may have links to the communities of Ntaria or Warburton in Western Australia.
Investigators said social media had suggested she is in Alice Springs.
“We appreciate the cooperation of the community,” a police spokesman said.
“Initial inquiries indicate Makasha may not be aware of the seriousness of the concerns of which police hold for her, and we urge anyone who is in contact with Makasha to encourage her to contact police or family to confirm the wellbeing of herself and her child.”
Police now consider the matter closed.
