The 30-year-old inmate of Holtz prison who left the jail while its security systems were down last week has been apprehended by police, following tip-offs from the public about his location.

NT Police said the man was arrested “without incident” on Wednesday morning at a Jingili residence and taken back to prison.

Detectives from Striek Force Trident and the police’s dog operations unit were involved in the arrest.

He is expected to be charged with escaping lawful custody.

On Monday, NT Police disclosed that the man had absconded from the prison on July 4 and called for the public’s assistance to help locate him after they had “exhausted” all efforts to find him. They said at the time that the man was not considered dangerous and was not serving time for violent offences.

The escape has again raised questions about security measures at the prison, after a source told the NT Independent the man was able to leave the facility because there were no cameras or door alarms functioning at the time.
