UPDATED: A 17-year-old learner driver was arrested last night after allegedly striking a female pedestrian on the Stuart Highway at Berrimah and fleeing the scene leaving her in a critical condition, NT Police said, alleging the male had consumed alcohol and was driving without a licenced passenger.
The incident occurred around 7:45pm when all emergency services responded to find an injured woman lying on the Stuart Highway who was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
The inbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours.
Police said witnesses to the alleged hit-and-run were able to provide a description of the vehicle involved, which police later located in Jingili.
“The vehicle had damage consistent with the crash and a 17-year-old learner driver was arrested at the scene,” Detective Sergeant Cory Borton said.
The male teen was later charged with hit-and-run, driving unlicensed or uninsured, driving without a licensed passenger and being a learner driver with alcohol in blood. he was granted bail on Wednesday.
“Anyone who is involved in a crash is required by law to stop and render assistance,” Sgt Borton said. “Thank you to the other motorists who did the right thing; through your information we were able to make a swift arrest.”
