Darwin City Council has released the schedule for the annual pre-cyclone roadside clean-up where residents are encouraged to prepare for the Wet season by putting out their furniture, white goods, mattresses, and more.
The council will also assist seniors and individuals with mobility restrictions during the clean-up period.
Dates have also been released for Palmerston.
Scheduled to start on August 31, and last until September 30, the clean-up service allows residents to remove hazardous items from their property that could cause damage or injuries during severe weather.
“Our crews work tirelessly every year to remove hundreds of tonnes of unwanted and potentially dangerous items from Darwin residences,” Mayor Kon Vatskalis said.
“The 2024 pre-cyclone clean-up will be divided into two collection zones, and eligible items for collection need to be put on the verge during the designated clean-up weekend for each zone.
“This year, we are allocating a specific weekend for residents to put their items on the verge, with collection taking place the following week, allowing plenty of time for the community to be prepared. Items added after the zone clean-up weekend dates will not be collected and will be the resident’s responsibility to remove.”
The council emphasised that the collection won’t include dangerous materials such as glass items, mirrors, paints, and liquid substances.
Moreover, elderly citizens and individuals with mobility issues are encouraged to reach out for help by calling 8930 0300 before Friday, September 27, to set up a collection service that assists them.
