Police seize $100,000 worth of drugs on way to remote Indigenous community

Two people have been arrested and an estimated $100,000 worth of cannabis and a small amount of meth has been intercepted on its way into an Indigenous community in West Arnhem, NT Police say.

Police said a single vehicle was stopped by the Nhulunbuy police on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Michael Milde said officers on patrol conducted an inspection of the vehicle driven by a 41-year-old male with a 34-year-old female passenger.

A commercial amount of cannabis along with methamphetamine and drug implements were found in the vehicle, Sgt Milde said.

The drugs and vehicle were seized while the couple was taken into custody and charged with serious drug offences, including possession of commercial quantity of schedule two drug and supplying commercial quantity of schedule two drug.

The pair are also facing a possess less than a trafickable quantity of schedule 1 dangerous drug charge.

“The seizure was extremely large, and police estimate the cannabis would have sold for $100,000 in the community,” Sgt Milde said.

“The flow of dangerous drugs into these communities have significant impacts on the health and finances of community members and we will continue to target this offending to keep our communities safe.”
