UPDATED: A 62-year-old Palmerston man is dead following a police raid on his Rosebery home on Friday morning as part of a joint child abuse taskforce investigation, the NT Police said, with the man reportedly sustaining self-inflicted stab wounds to the chest.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Travis Wurst said Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team officers arrived at the Lancewood Street home to execute a search warrant in relation to child abuse materials around 7am.

An hour later, around 8am, the man, described as Caucasian, obtained a knife and “struck himself multiple times in the chest”, Mr Wurst said.

He said the man did not threaten police with the knife and police attempted to taser him after he stabbed himself in the chest, “to control the male”.

One officer who attempted to intervene and disarm the man suffered an injury to his hand.

“Unfortunately, despite the efforts of St John’s [Ambulance] officers and the police officers present, the male succumbed to his injuries,” Mr Wurst said.

“There was also a female present at the address as well, who was the wife of the male who died. There were no other people present as a consequence of this particular matter.”

NT Police have declared the incident a death in custody, with Major Crime investigators currently leading the investigation. The investigation will be provided to the Coroner.

“At this stage, this is a really serious and traumatic incident for both the members present and the deceased person’s wife,” Mr Wurst said.

“Welfare support has been provided to all, which is really important for us, because this was a really quite graphic and traumatic scene.”

NT Police initially alerted the public to a “serious incident” it was investigating in Rosebery around 10am Friday morning, urging people to stay clear of Lancewood Street.

Police said in a brief statement at the time that there was “currently no risk to the public”, but were still advising the public to stay away from the Lancewood Street area.

Mr Wurst said on Friday afternoon that the road was still closed as the crime scene investigation continues.

How the NT Police were informed of the alleged child abuse material that led to the search warrant is also under investigation, Mr Wurst said, adding it was “particularly sensitive”.

Body-worn video from the officers involved will also be reviewed as part of the investigation.

Police are also calling for anyone with information about the incident to call 131 444, quoting reference number P25217042. Anonymous reports can also be made through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via https://crimestoppersnt.com.au/.

    • Really race and lack of SOP WTF. This is a good outcome. This person was beaing investigating for sex crimes on maby under age victims. If this person didn’t have anything to hide why stab yourself. is not the normal position of someone who had nothing to hide to stab your self to death ot police knocking on your door.

      • It’s only by the grace of God more people aren’t injured or killed by police incompetence when it comes to securing offenders.

Generally speaking, police have a timid and weak mindset, especially after the witch hunt of 2019.

  1. Interesting that his race is mentioned!
