A new $4 billion joint remote housing program between the federal and territory governments, which aims to build 270 new homes annually in remote NT communities over the next 10 years, will involve the Federal Labor Government getting “very much hands-on” to ensure the NT Government meets its targets, the Prime Minister has said.
The agreement between the governments, four Aboriginal land councils, and Aboriginal Housing NT comes after a previous $1.1 billion joint remote housing deal to construct 630 new homes (or 1,950 extra bedrooms) across the NT’s 73 remote communities since 2018 moved slowly with many delays.
how about once all these houses are completed, they get handed over to whichever family in full then they are responsible for all the maintenance thus saving future governments the cost of maintaining? plus giving families a sense of ownership?
The joint program equates to NT government needing to add $2Billion to their existing debt.Homelands have always been of doubtful value as they frequently sit unoccupied and are uneconomical to manage,maintain and provide services to. They should be the responsibility of the land councils.
