NTEC resumes vote counting for close seats today

Vote counting for the four still undecided electoral seats will continue this morning, with hundreds of new votes added and potentially thousands more postal votes by the end of the week which will determine final outcomes.

Araluen, Barkly, Blain and Namatjira are still too close to call with only a small number of votes separating candidates in those electorates.

The NT Electoral Commission said after a review of declaration votes on Monday – involving people not on the electoral role permitted to cast a ballot – a total of 1777 votes will be added to the vote count across the NT.

Postal votes are also yet to be counted.

Postal and declaration votes will be added in Araluen (59), Barkly (171), Blain (57) and Namatjira (63) to an exceptionally close contest that currently has only 12 votes separating the candidates in Araluen, 23 votes separating the candidates in Barkly, 14 votes in Blain and 10 votes in Namatjira.

The NTEC said a recount off all seats with a margin of less than 100 votes will be carried out on Wednesday.

There’s currently 4,229 postal votes still outstanding Terirtory-wide, which will play a factor in determining winners of the close seats.

Postal votes will still be accepted by the NTEC until Friday with an official declaration of final numbers to be certified by next Monday.

Last week, Territory Labor filed a complaint with the NTEC, suggesting postal votes were being sent in after the official cutoff date of election day. However, changes to the Electoral Act in 2016 added an extra week to get postal votes in, as well as scrapping the requirement of a witness to ensure the vote was sealed and mailed in accordance with applicable rules and timeframes.

The 2016 changes also permitted anyone to apply for and receive a postal vote with nothing stopping them from filling out a ballot after already knowing the preliminary results of a particular electorate, provided it was returned to the NTEC by this Friday.
