UPDATED: A 37-year-old Darwin police officer has been charged with rape and property offences.

The NT Police had earlier refused to say what charges he was facing, but the NT Independent revealed it was associated with allegations of sexual assault.

The officer appeared in Darwin local court this afternoon.

He has been suspended with pay.

The officer, who is heavily involved with the NT Police Association, was charged with one count of sexual intercourse without consent, possessing ammunition without a permit and unlawfully possessing property.

Police media manager Rob Cross said the offences were “allegedly committed whilst off duty” and that the officer “has been suspended with pay”.

“As the matter is before the court, no further information will be provided,” he said in a brief statement.

The officer will appear in court again in November.

Less than two weeks ago, the NT Police held a press conference about cocaine-related charges against two Darwin officers.

In that instance, a 43-year-old man and 28-year-old woman, both officers of Darwin Command, were charged with drug offences and suspended without pay.

  1. Different strokes for different folks. Drugs charges while on duty trump a rape charge where a case has yet to be made. Standing by for the next episode. May be an attempt to get the union off the commissioners back for problems with remote policing.

  2. Really only suspended “with pay” wow.. there is definitely a different stroke on this
