Mask mandate to lift on Monday, check-in app use reduced

The NT’s indoor mask mandate in most places will be lifted on Monday, the Chief Minister has declared, with the check-in app only to be used at venues that require proof of vaccination from today.

However, masks will still be required in high-risk areas, including airports, hospitals, jails and aged-care facilities after Monday.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the mask mandate could be lifted next Monday as part of “more freedoms” now that the peak numbers of COVID-19 cases have passed.

“We can say with some certainty that we have passed the peak,” he said.

“The Territory has stared down the Omicron wave and it hasn’t been easy.”

Mr Gunner said the health advice provided to him indicated that the masks mandate could be lifted by Monday.

He said the government recorded 624 new cases over the latest reporting period with 76 people in hospital, two in the ICU and two deaths reported.

“Now that we are past the Omicron peak it is time for the Territory to enter the next phase, where we continue to live with the virus but with more freedom and more personal responsibility,” he said.

Mr Gunner added the government “strongly recommends” continuing to wear a mask, but it will no longer be compulsory.

Territorians will also no longer be required to use the check-in app at most venues as of today, but it will remain a requirement at venues where proof of vaccination is needed to enter, including pubs, clubs and restaurants.

“The decision that we have made today is not a sign that COVID is gone, we know it’s not going anywhere,” Mr Gunner said.

“We also know that we can live with the virus and get on with things as we must.”

Last month, Tasmania lifted vaccine passport restrictions which means citizens no longer have to show their vaccine status to enter pubs, clubs and at major events.
