A 36-year-old man has been charged for allegedly raping a woman in Darwin City last week, NT Police said.

A statement released by media manager Rob Cross this morning stated that the alleged rape of a 43-year-old woman occurred last Wednesday, July 28, “in the vicinity of Woods and McLachlan streets”.

The man was arrested and charged yesterday, police said.

Mr Cross did not say why the man was not arrested or charged sooner, or if he presented a risk to the community over the last six days while at large. It was unclear if the man knew the woman or if it was a crime of opportunity.

He was remanded to face local court today on one charge of sexual intercourse without consent, one charge of stealing and five counts of obtaining benefit by deception.

The NT Police executive and media unit faced criticism earlier this year for not publicly reporting sexual assaults – some involving children – in a timely manner.
