A man who allegedly drove a vehicle into a group of people in a remote community, causing “significant injuries”, has been arrested and charged, NT Police said.
Police are also investigating a 28-year-old woman being struck in the head with an “edged weapon” during the melee in the remote community of Nyirripi last week.
Police media manager Rob Cross said a 22-year-old man has been charged with recklessly endangering serious harm, driving a motor vehicle causing serious harm and hit and run offences after allegedly driving the car into a group of people on January 4, which resulted in two men aged 18 and 24 being transported to Alice Springs Hospital with “significant injuries”.
Police said they were called to a “large disturbance” between two groups in the remote community last Tuesday.
Mr Cross said two days after the incident, police from Yuendumu and Alice Springs located and arrested the man, who has also been charged with driving a vehicle while unlicensed and driving an unregistered/uninsured vehicle.
He did not explain where the man was at the time of his arrest.
The man was scheduled to appear in Alice Springs court today.
“A 28-year-old woman who was struck to the head with an edged weapon during the disturbance was treated at the local clinic for non-life threatening injuries. Police investigations to identify the offender responsible for this, continue,” Mr Cross said.
