Charles Darwin is most known for “On the Origin of Species”, the book in which he outlined his theory of evolution, which was primarily inspired by his journey aboard the HMS Beagle. The world over, people have attempted to celebrate his contribution to humanity’s scientific knowledge, and as a result, there are locations dedicated in his honor on every continent. Here are thirteen stunning sites named for this pivotal figure in contemporary science.

Darwin Island, Galapagos Islands

For Darwin, the Galapagos Islands is where his theory of evolution took hold. As a result, it’s only fitting that one of the islands in the area is named after him. As a bonus, the island’s other name for Darwin, Isla Darwinia, has a rock formation called Darwin’s Arch. One of the Galapagos Islands’ most recognizable features is a stone arch situated far from Darwin Island.

Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia

Darwin is the capital city of Australia’s Northern Territory. The traditional owners of the area, the Larrakia people, refer to the town as Garramilla, which refers to the white stone found in the area.

Like the rest of the Top End, the Darwin region has a tropical climate with alternating wet and dry seasons. Temperatures and humidity rise during the “build-up” period leading to Darwin’s wet season.

The wet season in Darwin typically arrives in late November to early December, bringing heavy monsoonal downpours, spectacular lightning displays, and increased cyclone activity. The city has clear skies and mild sea breezes from the harbor during the dry season.

Darwin, FK, Falkland Islands

Darwin is a town in East Falkland, the Falkland Islands, located on Choiseul Sound on the east side of the island’s central isthmus, north of Goose Green. On occasion, it was (and still is) referred to as Port Darwin.

Darwin’s attractions are a corral, the Galpon building, which housed nineteenth-century gauchos, and the Argentine Military Cemetery. There is also a small racetrack for local amateur and hobby horse riders.

Mount Darwin, California, USA

In Kings County National Park in California, Mount Darwin is one of the Sierra Nevada mountain range’s flat-top peaks. It’s one of those rare instances when its lack of greenery enhances a location’s attractiveness. Also atop the mountain is a glacier named after Darwin, which provides an icy contrast to the climb of the peak itself. While it is possible to trek, know that it will be one of the most challenging climbs you do, whether you use crampons

Darwin, Oklahoma, USA

The city of Darwin was established during the final days of the Indian Territory in Jack’s Fork County, which was part of the Choctaw Nation’s Pushmataha District. Following the statehood of Oklahoma in 1907, the area became an agricultural and farming center. Ranching became the economic mainstay after farming declined and continues to be the dominant activity.

Darwin, Minnesota, USA

Darwin is a city in Meeker County, Minnesota, USA. It is one of several locations claiming to have the world’s most giant ball of twine rolled by one person. The stringy behemoth measures 12 feet (3.65 m) in diameter and weighs 8 tons.

Darwin, Illinois, USA

Darwin, a town in Inyo County, California, and village in Clark County, Illinois, was named after Charles Darwin, the English naturalist. Darwin is located on the Wabash River, across the river from Indiana. It was designated as Clark County’s county seat in 1823, and the first Clark County Courthouse was built there in 1827.

Darwin, California, USA

Darwin is a mining town located in Inyo County, California, in the United States. It’s about 22 miles (35 kilometers) southeast of Keeler. It was named after Charles Darwin French. During the fall of 1850, Erwin Gudde, French of Fort Tejon, was with a party of prospectors in the area. French also led a party into Death Valley in 1860 to search for the mythical Gunsight Lode via the local wash, naming the wash, canyon, and future town after himself.

Darwin, Mashonaland Central, Zimbabwe

Darwin is a town in Zimbabwe’s Mashonaland Central province. Mount Darwin is thought to have been the place of some of the earliest European missionary work in southern Africa by the Portuguese Jesuit Gonçalo da Silveira. Darwin was named after the British naturalist Charles Darwin by hunter and explorer Frederick Courtney Selous.

Darwin, Soriano, Uruguay

Villa Darwin is a village or populated center in Uruguay’s Soriano Department. Sacachispas is the name of the rural area where it is located. Palmar, situated to the east-northeast, is the nearest populated area. José Hargain, a French Basque who settled here with his wife and daughters, was a pioneer in this area. The province’s capital was founded in 1853 as Villa Independencia.

Darwin, Rio Negro, Argentina

Darwin is a village and municipality in the Rio Negro Province of Argentina. The population of this town was growing in 1934, which led to the construction of model houses for railway workers and others who came to work the land in the area. The architecture of the houses distinguishes the new neighborhood from the old one as one enters the town.

Mount Darwin, Tasmania

Located in Tasmania, this is the second peak globally to bear Darwin’s name. It’s shorter and greener than the other, and there’s more indication of humans living on it. Some of the mines have been left unexploited in the mountainside village of Darwin. Darwin Glass, a gray-green meteorite that fell on Mount Darwin, is the most well-known result of the mountain’s meteor impact. Some of the mines appeared during the endeavor to gather the glass, but they didn’t stay long.

Mount Darwin, Antarctica

At the head of the Beardmore Glacier, Mount Darwin is a conspicuous nunatak or glacier island that rises to around 2,500 m above sea level (8,200 ft)—named after Major Leonard Darwin (President of the Royal Geographical Society).
