A man has been charged for going armed in public, assault, and discharging a firearm causing danger, after allegedly shooting a gun into the air before being disarmed by another person in an unnamed Aboriginal community in West Daly, NT Police said.

Police media manager Rob Cross said that about 9.30am on Monday, the 23-year-old man was allegedly walking around the community with a firearm following an alleged disagreement with another man.

“One shot was allegedly fired into the air before another community member disarmed the man,” he said.

Mr Cross said he continued to make threats and police arrested him after a chase.

He said the man was charged with going armed in public, assault, discharging a firearm causing danger, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, and possessing and using a firearm whilst unlicensed and was remanded to appear in court on Tuesday.

Mr Cross did not respond to a question about what community the man was in and why that information was not released. He also did give details of the alleged assault.

Communities in the area that have police stations are Peppimenarti and Wadeye. The latter has been the scene of ongoing riots and violence on the last few months with many houses destroyed and hundreds of people displaced.
