NT Police have arrested a man for an alleged indecent assault on a woman in an Alice Springs carpark on Wednesday morning who may be the same masturbator who allegedly committed an indecent act on another woman on Monday afternoon, police say.
The 30-year-old man, described as Aboriginal in appearance, approached a woman around 11:30am on Wednesday who was walking in the Gregory Terrace carpark and allegedly started to indecently assault her, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Carmen Butcher said.
The woman was able to punch the man twice to the face that made him run from the scene, police said.
Sgt Butcher said they were able to use CCTV footage around the perimeter to follow the offender who then got into a taxi and left the area.
The man was located and arrested at a Sadadeen residence and was taken to the Alice Springs Watch House where he was charged with one count of Commit an Act of Gross Indecency.
He was placed into custody and scheduled to appear before the Alice Springs Local Court today.
The victim told the police there were witnesses to the incident.
“In this instance the victim screamed at the man, which in any case would have brought attention to what was occurring,” Sgt Butcher said. “We urge anyone who may have been in that car park on Gregory Terrace at the time, to contact police.
“Any information is of assistance to police.”
Meanwhile, police said investigations continue into whether this is the same man who approached a woman on Sturt Terrace and behaved indecently on Tuesday afternoon at around 4:45 pm.
Police said the woman was engaged in a “short conversation” by an unidentified male before he began to masturbate outside the property.
“The woman demanded the man leave the property and he was last seen walking towards the Todd River,” police said, adding that no one was injured in the incident.
NT Police urge anyone who may have witnessed any of these indecent incidents, to contact them on 131 444 or report it anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, referencing PROMIS number 9430513.
