A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stealing alcohol from a Katherine residence and assaulting an NT police officer, police have said.

At around 8:30 pm Tuesday night, NT police responded to a report of a man who broke into a house and stole liquor. It was not specified what amount or type of liquor was stolen.

The offender was spotted by the police on their way to the location and placed him under arrest, police said in a statement.

According to NT Police, the man physically resisted the arrest as they were attempting to handcuff him. When being searched while handcuffed, the man assaulted one of the officers by kicking his legs and striking his head.

The man was brought to the Katherine Watch House. He was charged with; assaulting a member of the police force, resisting police in execution of duty, stealing, and trespassing.

The assaulted police officer meanwhile suffered minor injuries.

Superintendent Daniel Shean condemned the incident.

“No one deserves to go to work to be assaulted,” he said in the statement. “Assaults on police will not be tolerated. Those that assault police will be held to account for their actions.”
