Dear Editor,
It’s sad to see the destruction of so much native vegetation and habitat by either the developer, the engineers and surveyors, the planners, or Power and Water, when constructing a water main from the Holtze subdivision through the headwaters of Mitchell Creek to the main water connection near Lambrick Avenue in Palmerston.
Why do we need to clear completely a corridor 25 to 30 metres wide to bury a pipeline?
Can’t we do this with minimal disturbance to the environment instead of following an insensitive set of mathematical instructions drawn up by someone in an office in Darwin?
I get the feeling no one cares.
Perhaps the developer could, for penance, use the moonscape to now build a cycle path next to the pipeline connecting to other cycle paths in the area so children living in Holtze could ride their bikes to Good Shepherd College, Howard Springs Primary School or McKillop Catholic College.
After that, the developer could revegetate the remaining disturbed land so the bandicoots and their friends could return back home.
Gerry Wood, Howard Springs.
