Darwin Mayor Kon Vatskalis appeared to believe his wife running the Confucius Institute would be politically damaging for him, threatening legal action against a private citizen for raising the issue with council in 2020, a private email from the Mayor obtained by the NT Independent shows.
The email surfaced after it was recently revealed Mr Vatskalis’s wife Amy Yu-Vatskalis is currently the official director of the controversial organisation that has been shut down in other countries over national security concerns and accusations it is involved in targeting “influential local politicians” to push China’s national interests.
