Tuesday’s night’s Darwin Council meeting turned to anger after a vote on the controversial RSL Esplanade development was delayed until further notice. Here is a public statement from Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis.

“Tonight I was forced to move to lay on the table, council’s report regarding the RSL club location in the car park next to the Cenotaph,” he wrote.

“Unfortunately I had to do that as new information regarding the site was provided to me by a knowledgeable individual late in the afternoon which did not allow me to pass this very important information to the alderman.

“I believe that this information is vital for all alderman to consider in order to make an informed decision, and in the past alderman have requested that information is provided to them before meetings for them to consider.

“I will now endeavor to bring this back to council asap and once again it will be in the open.

“I apologise to all people who came to council tonight as we did not have time to send out a notice. However I do not want us to make a decision that we make regret in the future.

“As I said before the information are vital for us to consider and make the right decision.

“We will advise the public when this report will come back to council for consideration.”
