One of four males who allegedly robbed and assaulted a 67-year-old wheelchair-bound man in his Malak residence has been charged, NT Police said, while the victim has described the ordeal as a scene from a horror movie.

Police said they are actively hunting down the three other alleged thieves, aged between 17 to 21, involved in the robbery and assault.

Victim Jimmy Marshall sustained cuts and bruises after thieves brutally attacked him by knocking him to the ground and punching him in the head and face.

Mr Marshall recounted the callous attack in an interview with Mix 104.9 on Thursday morning describing it as a scene from a torture movie. He also said he felt he was targeted because of his disability.

He said on the wee hours of Wednesday, his dog heard suspicious noises around his residence in Marshall Crt.

“I’ve got a little Chihuahua and she sleeps with me. She started barking which is not uncommon, but kept on barking and barking,” he said.

He said he got out of bed to his wheelchair and went to the living room.

“A torch coming through my sliding window and I approached it, and somebody shone a torch, a really great [light] in my eyes,” Mr Marshall said.

“I told them to go away. And then they started banging their fists on the window and then next minute, bang! The whole glass plate just come free on top of me.

“And then they started to come in.”

He said one guy kicked him out of his wheelchair and he was knocked on the ground.

“Two guys started screaming at me: Where’s your car keys? Where’s the car keys and where’s your money?

“And I said, I got no money. And I don’t know where my car keys are. They punched me again and kept on asking where’s your car keys?

“I suddenly found myself breathing on the ground and thought at the time, I was petrified, don’t know what to do.

“I didn’t know where the punches were coming from, there were punch in my head, punching my face, kicking me.”

Then, he said the thieves found the car keys and they all disappeared.

“Fortunately, they didn’t get my wallet,” he said.

“I couldn’t see them. I couldn’t get up. Because I was pushed on the ground. They stole my phone so I couldn’t phone anybody.

“I had to crawl across the living room for the help. And I was screaming and screaming. Luckily enough, a neighbor called Sam, he come up with flashlights and he saw me. And he phoned the police and we took it from there.”

Police recover car that Mr Marshall used to visit his wife in aged care

Police earlier recovered Mr Marshall’s specially-fitted Mazda 3 car after it was abandoned in Karama.

Mr Marshall said he spent hours modifying that vehicle for his disability needs and that he uses the vehicle to visit his wife who is in aged care.

“I’ve spent hours in that …[it was] modified for me. And I love that car,” he said.

“I go up there [to his wife] every day or every second day and take over my car. I need my car, you know, I haven’t seen the wife, since it happened. But I think I’m gonna train out there today. I’ve not been up there.”

Mr Marshall said he believes he was targeted by the criminals because he is handicapped.

But he remained positive saying “I’m not just gonna curl up and die. I got a wife to look after.”

Serious Crime and Strike Force Trident Detectives arrested a 14-year-old male involved in the crime at Malak who has been charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated unlawful use of motor vehicle, aggravated unlawful entry, and criminal damage.

  1. That kid was bailed to appear on the following day. Is he still locked up, or is he still running wild?
