Beetaloo basin fracking companies’ water allocation will have to be approved by the federal government to assess it against its impact on the aquifier, after changes passed the Senate this week, a change which Tamboran Resources said would not affect its gas production plans.

The change to the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act passed the Senate on Tuesday, bringing in an expansion of the so-called water trigger, which had previously applied to coal seam gas projects, and which was an election promise by Labor, which the Greens argued must be amended this year.
