Fire at Woolner business under investigation

by | Jun 6, 2022 | Cops | 0 comments

A major structure fire that saw two adjoining properties in Woolner engulfed in flames on Thursday evening is under investigation, after emergency crews from three different fire stations rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services were called to the fire around 7:20pm on Bishop Street that eventually spread to the adjoining property behind on Jolly Street.

A statement released late last night did not specify whether anyone was hurt in the fire or if it was being treated as suspicious.

It is believed the fire started at Carcom on Bishop Street and was attended by firefighters from Darwin, Marrara and Berrimah fire stations. It was originally believed the fire had started at the adjacent Darwin Auto Mobile Car, but it’s understood that company was spared from the flames.

“On arrival, there were flames showing from the roof of the premises,” said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer in a statement.

“First arriving firefighters gained access and commenced firefighting operations including the use of the Bronto aerial appliance to attack the fire from above.

“Firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to [more] adjoining properties.

“The premises sustained significant damage and investigators are now looking into the cause of the fire.”

Note: This story was updated to reflect the fact the fire did not start at Darwin Auto Mobile Car.
