Fifty-five NT teachers in quarantine as term three starts

A total of 55 Territory school staff both teaching and non-teaching are still currently in quarantine as face-to-face classes resume today for term three in the Northern Territory, NT Education Minister Selena Uibo announced.

Currently, 24 teaching staff and one non-teaching staff member are completing supervised mandatory quarantine after returning from designated coronavirus hotspots interstate. Their respective places of origin however were not disclosed.

A further 27 teaching staff and three non-teaching staff are undertaking self-isolation, in compliance with coronavirus mandatory quarantine protocols relating to interstate arrivals prior to July 17.

Students who have travelled from interstate and are required to quarantine, will be supported by their school to engage in home learning from the start of the term.

Meanwhile students and staff who have completed their quarantine will be required to secure a negative COVID-19 test result letter from health authorities before returning to school.

Minister for Education Selena Uibo said that schools are managing their respective COVID-19 response and pandemic preparedness plans at the local level.

“While the Territory is currently the safest jurisdiction in Australia, there is no room for complacency and each school has a pandemic plan in place to ensure the safety of students, staff and wider school community,” Ms Uibo said.

She said these plans should also guide learning delivery in the event of community transmission of COVID-19 in the NT.

To date, there has been no community transmission in the Territory.

“Teachers and principals have done an extraordinary job throughout the pandemic and have prepared for flexible delivery of education, should the need arise,” she said.

The NT Government said it spent $3 million on disinfecting and cleaning schools in preparation for term three.

NT schools were the first in Australia to return to face-to-face learning from the beginning of term two. The Ms Uibo said average school attendance in term two was nearly 80 per cent, about two per cent higher than term two in 2019.
