Darwin hosts inaugural Top End ‘Veteran Games’

Roberston Barracks will open to the public on Friday for the first Veteran Games competition held in Darwin, that will see over 200 veterans, active service members and spectators converge for the “high-energy competition” that aims to celebrate teamwork, resilience and mateship.

The games were founded in 2022 by veteran and former Special Forces officer Heston Russell to create a “proactive health initiative” in response to findings from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.

Teams will engage in obstacle courses, pool-based events and tug of war, amongst other events, with the winning side securing a $20,000 grant to compete at the national finals on the Gold Coast later this year.

“With the support of the NT Government and 1st Brigade, we’re showing what’s possible when Defence and community work together to back those who’ve served,” Mr Russel said. “This isn’t just about sport – it’s about restoring purpose, belonging and support for veterans at every stage of their journey.”

Commander of the 1st Brigade, Brigadier Doug Pashley, said the games represent a vital opportunity for both veterans and active service members.

“It’s a great opportunity for veterans to reconnect, enjoy some friendly competition, and for veterans and serving personnel to spend valuable time together,” he said.

“I look forward to engaging with participants, sharing perspectives, and helping grow the event even further in future years.”

In collaboration with the Veteran Support Force and 1st Brigade, the Darwin Regional Heat will showcase personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and US Marine Corps as they engage in military-style problem-solving and physical challenges.

Robertson Barracks will welcome visitors for a free, full-day event, providing Territorians an opportunity to engage with the action and connect with the veteran community.
