UPDATED: The Bureau of Meteorology has updated their cyclone watch to a warning for Nhulunbuy and Groote Eylandt including Port McArthur, Port Roper and Numbulwar with NT authorities advising residents in affected areas to finalise preparations and identify where the closest public shelters are.
A flood watch has also been issued for the Carpentaria coastal rivers.
Tropical Cyclone Tiffany, had weakened overnight after making landfall over North Queensland yesterday, but is expected to reform today in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
It’s liekly to cross Groote Eyelandt on Wednesday as a category 2 cyclone, with gales expected and winds of up to 140 km/h.
NT Police are reminding affected Territorians to use all safety precautions and not attempt to cross any flooded roads or crossings.
NTPFES said they have prepared the Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate the preparation for and response to this cyclone.
“People living and working in the areas under a watch are advised that now is the time to make sure your cyclone plans are finalized,” NT Police said in a statement.
Territorians in the “watch zone” are being urged to prepare emergency kits and are advised that every family should have an evacuation plan in the event they need to seek shelter.
“We are keeping a close eye on the possible tracks of this storm, and our local emergency management teams have activated their plans and are making the necessary preparations to see their communities through this event,” Regional Controller, Assistant Commissioner Janelle Tonkin said.
Ms Tonkin said that as of Monday night, there was no need to evacuate people from Groote Eylandt.
“The cyclone structures there are designed to withstand Category 3 storms,” she said. “However, anyone who wishes to leave should do so early.”
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, as of Monday afternoon, Cyclone Tiffany had weakened rapidly after crossing the coast over Princess Charlotte Bay, about 70km southeast of Coen, Queensland.
The current cyclone watch in the NT/Qld border to Nhulunbuy including Groote Elyandt is in anticipation of Cyclone Tiffany re-intensifying to cyclone strength in the Gulf of Carpentaria as it moves west toward the Northern Territory.
Tiffany is forecast to strengthen while crossing the Gulf of Carpentaria and make landfall along the Roper Groote Coast by early Wednesday.
Senior Meteorologist Dean Narramore said the Bureau would continue to monitor Tropical Cyclone Tiffany and provide updates as it progresses across the Cape and into the Gulf.
“These tropical systems intensify quickly and can shift direction very quickly as they develop, so the Bureau will be updating our warnings and advice to the community and our emergency services colleagues across Queensland and Northern Territory,” he said.
Meanwhile, some parts of Queensland have been inundated by flood waters. Authorities reported that one person died during the storm and a 14-year-old girl was missing as waters began to recede in Maryborough in the south-east.
