Unfortunately prison for many is a nice place to be. It must be made to be a deterrent versus a holiday environment as may offenders see it! If it becomes a place of deterrent where offenders don’t want to go, then we are on the road to less crime….. and maybe the government won’t have to build more jails (Australia wide)… Commit the crime do the time – an old saying but irrelevant to the NT because jail is a luxury in most offenders lives…
The bleeding hearts have to be sacked, and the prisons revert to punishment as they have been a total failure on rehabilitation. No more new prisons, no more single cells, bunk beds only and if there is not enough space, tents and bunk beds on the basketball courts, work from 6am to 6pm even if it is only moving dirt from one side of the compound to the other.
I trust Corrections will factor in more Alternatives To Custody (ATC) facilities so low-risk people are not imprisoned. A very successful program is being delivered in Alice Springs located at the Desert Knowledge Precinct; another is in the throes of being developed and delivered on Groote Eylandt.
More creative ways of managing behavioral issues in communities are required. Perhaps the relevant people in government could visit various facilities and programs being delivered around Scandinavia. Incarceration rates there are minuscule.
