A 46-year-old man from Knuckey Lagoon has died more than a week after being hospitalised with life-threatening injuries sustained during an alleged assault, in an incident that was not previously disclosed.

In a statement this morning, police said the incident happened on Friday, April 1, however it’s unclear when the incident actually happened, as April 1 was a Thursday.

The incident was only made public after the man died and police said the charges have now been upgraded against a 29-year-old suspect who was arrested days later for the assault.

Detective Sergeant Justene Dwyer said two weeks ago police responded to a report of a collapsed man in Knuckey Lagoon. The time was not mentioned.

The man had been brought to the Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment where doctors found that he sustained life threatening injuries.

Police did not mention what injuries were sustained or what part of the victim’s body had caused him to collapse. It was not also disclosed if a weapon was used during the assault.

Possibly three days after the crime happened, on April 4, the 29-year-old man, known to the victim was reportedly arrested for unlawfully causing serious harm and was taken into custody.

“The victim died from his injuries on 10 April 2021 and an additional charge of ‘violent act cause death’ has been laid against the offender,” Sgt Dwyer said in a statement.

She said further investigations are ongoing.

The man is scheduled to face charges at the Darwin Local Court on June 2, 2021.
