The third round of the $90,000 myPalmerston voucher scheme is on its final rollout in time for Christmas shopping to further encourage local spending, the Mayor has said.
Palmerston Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell said as of Wednesday morning there was about $7,000 remaining on the scheme and strongly urged Palmerston residents to make use of it.
“If you’re doing that late last-minute Christmas shopping there’s still time to use it,” she told ABC Radio Darwin.
“Shopping at Christmas time can be expensive and frankly quite stressful, and this next round aims to help customers save money and encourage shoppers to come out to Palmerston to buy their presents.
“There’s opportunity to get a little bit back and support local traders as you go.
“If you’re doing Christmas shopping and you’re looking online, perhaps use it as an opportunity to spend local instead.”
Ms Pascoe-Bell said the majority of Palmerston businesses she has spoken with were satisfied with the results that they’ve experienced through the myPalmerston voucher scheme.
The second round of the $90,000 scheme has generated a total spend of $497,707, according to the City of Palmerston’s website.
The first tranche of the scheme worth $40,000, was spent in exactly two weeks after the program launched on September 29. It resulted in a total spend of over $225,000 within Palmerston’s local businesses, the council said.
