Sex crime detectives have apprehended two boys in connection to the alleged indecent assaults of two women in Casuarina on Tuesday night – one of whom is a nine-year-old and cannot be charged due to his age, NT Police said.

The NT Police broke from standard protocol earlier this week to inform the public about the crimes and sought the public’s help to identify the children involved after two women were approached from behind as they entered their unit complex and “touched inappropriately”.

Police said this morning that the boys were apprehended but will not face any charges.

“The first youth, aged 14, was arrested for aggravated assault and released into the custody of his parents without charge,” detective Senior Sgt Mark Grieve said.

“He will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.”

The nine-year-old cannot be charged due to being under the age of criminal responsibility that is currently 10 years of age.

Police said the child was “released into the care of his responsible adults with appropriate referrals for ongoing support”.

Sgt Grieve praised the women for reporting the indecent assaults, which the police made public against their standard policy to suppress crimes of a sexual nature.

“We commend the women for reporting these incidents,” Sgt Grieve said. “Thanks to the reports, we were able to identify the alleged offenders and early action and intervention is being taken to address their behaviour.”
