A 68-year-old man who was allegedly stalking Palmerston kids in a white van last week in Woodroffe has been arrested and charged with unlawful stalking, NT Police say.

Police initiated an investigation and identified the 68-year-old man was allegedly behind the suspicious stalking of children in the vicinity of Harrison Circuit and Sirius Park, Woodroffe last week.

The man was located, arrested and charged on Thursday.

He had also been alleged to have used a blue Renault van to stalk children.

NT Police earlier warned the public after they received reports last week beginning August 5, that a white van had been following school children in Palmerston streets.

The latest incident involved the man allegedly approaching a child on foot at Sirius Park, Woodroffe on August 7.

NT Police said in that instance, the child ran to her school after being approached by the unidentified man and reported the incident to police.

The child described the man as having a black beard and was wearing a fluorescent orange work shirt, police said.

Public witnesses and CCTV footage from the vicinity where the van was seen, were used by Strike Force Trident and the Sex Crimes Unit to identify the man.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Jordan said it had been a collaborative effort between police and the public to identify the man.

“We would like to thank the public for their assistance in this matter,” Sgt Jordan said.

“We encourage all parents, carers, and children to remember the R’s, recognise an unsafe situation, react by getting away and report it to the first person you feel safe with.”
