A Top End worker had their fingertips amputated after suffering severe injuries while operating a self-propelled lawnmower, which kicked off an NT WorkSafe investigation.

The incident occurred when the worker attempted to adjust the mower’s cutting height and steadied it, causing his fingers to go underneath the mower deck, resulting in severe injuries to the worker’s two fingers.

Preliminary investigations suggested that a key safety feature of the mower had been deliberately disabled, potentially causing the incident.

Investigations showed that the blade control bar, designed to stop the engine and blades when released automatically, was secured to the mower handle with a wire, effectively bypassing the safety mechanism.

NT WorkSafe alleged that during the investigation, agency inspectors discovered that two ride-on mowers, operated by a separate company, had their roll-over protection structures folded down and were missing essential pulley guards.

This findings raised concerns about safety practices in the lawn care industry.

NT WorkSafe has advised workplaces undertaking similar activities to implement safety measures, including conducting Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Control (HIRAC) and adhering to the Territory’s work health and safety consultation, cooperation, and coordination code of practice. It is also advised workers complete pre-start checks before operating plant and machinery.

NT WorkSafe’s investigations focus on pinpointing incident causes and recommending actions, the body said. WorkSafe Inspectors will support businesses if problems stem from misunderstandings of work, health, and safety responsibilities.
