A young girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in Palmerston early Saturday morning, NT Police said, as they continue to search for the alleged offender.

Police said the female was allegedly sexually assaulted by an unknown male around 1:50am on a path between Temple Terrace and Hannibal Crescent in Palmerston.

Police provided no further details, including no description of the alleged offender.

“Investigations are ongoing and at this stage no further information can be provided,” police media director Mark Wilton said in a statement.

“Detectives urge anyone with information in relation to the incident to make contact on 131 444. Please quote reference number P25128249. Anonymous reports can be made through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via https://crimestoppersnt.com.au/.”

The NT Police faced significant community anger after failing to notify the public about six sexual assaults against women that occurred over a two-week period last month in Nightcliff.

No explanation was provided for why none of the incidents were publicly reported by police.

NT Police have a long history of failing to publicly report sexual assaults in a timely manner.

It was also not explained why the latest Palmerston incident was not publicly reported until late Monday afternoon.
