A man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman on the Stuart Hwy south of Tennant Creek, before forcing her into a car and driving into the bush, NT Police have said.

Senior Sergeant Crispin Gargan said in a statement that about noon on Wednesday police received reports that a man was assaulting a woman on the highway about 15km south of Tennant Creek.

“He allegedly forced the woman into a vehicle before driving into the bush,” Snr Sgt Gargan said.

He said officers from Tennant Creek Crime and general duties officers from the town and Ali Curung and Ti Tree responded, and caught the man’s vehicle a short time later.

Snr Sgt Gargan said a 27-year-old man was arrested and is expected to be charged later today, while the woman was taken to Tenant Creek Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We are in the early stages of this investigation, however, this is being treated as a domestic violence incident,” he said.

Anyone experiencing domestic or family violence can call police on 131 444 or in an emergency call 000.
